A good swimsuit is an investment — and like any investment, it holds its value with care. With the right care, a premium swimsuit lasts five seasons; with the wrong care, it fades in a single summer. Here are 7 simple rules:

1. Apply Sunscreen First, Then Put Your Swimsuit On

Sunscreens and oils are the number one cause of the most stubborn stains and colour fading on swimwear fabric. Apply your sunscreen, let it dry on your skin, then put on your swimsuit.

2. Rinse in Fresh Water After Every Wear

Sea salt and pool chlorine break down elastane fibres over time. Rinsing in clean water as soon as you get back from the beach preserves the fabric's stretch. On styles with hardware, run the water over the hardware too.

3. Steer Clear of Detergent

Harsh detergents damage the fibres. Wash gently by hand with a mild soap. The washing machine, tumble dryer and iron are a swimsuit's three enemies.

4. Do Not Wring, Press to Dry

Twisting a swimsuit to wring it out ruins its shape. Press out the excess water with a towel.

5. Dry in the Shade

Direct sunlight fades the fabric. Dry your swimsuit in the shade, laid flat rather than hung up; the weight of the wet fabric causes it to stretch on a hanger.

6. Store Separately

Out of season, keep your swimsuit in a cloth bag, away from other coloured clothes. A plastic bag traps moisture; a cloth bag lets it breathe.

7. Watch Out for Hot Surfaces

Poolside stones and hot sun loungers can wear the fabric; laying a towel down underneath you is both hygienic and protective.
